A classic Brit horror/chiller, based on a Daphne du Maurier story, and directed by the brilliant Nic Roeg (Walkabout, Performance, Man Who Fell to Earth), whilst at the height of his game.
This is a SLOW, suspenseful movie, with little in the way of action, and (almost) no gore. (So not one for the modern Attention Deficit Disorder brigade). Nevertheless, I reckon this is one of the most powerful, disturbing horror films ever made.
It takes place almost entirely in a grey, autumnal Venice, with the tourists gone. Anyone who has ever stepped off the main tourist drag in Venice and found themselves in a deserted, mediaeval alley perhaps knows the tingle of unease that this city can induce in you – a stranger in an unfamiliar and suddenly sinister place. This movie brings that tingle to celluloid life and draws it out to an intensely creepy crescendo. The finale is unforgettable.
If you haven’t seen this movie, be aware that it contains a very famous sex scene between Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. The scene is genuinely erotic and integral to the plot, but very graphic. The film also has a twist ending, so if you’re going to check it out on the internet before watching, be careful of those spoilers!!
Plot summary (no spoilers):
John and Laura Baxter are living in Venice when they meet a pair of elderly sisters, one of whom claims to be psychic. She insists that she sees the spirit of the Baxters’ daughter, who recently drowned. Laura is intrigued, but John resists the idea. He, however, seems to have his own psychic flashes, seeing their daughter walk the streets in her red cloak, as well as Laura and the sisters on a funeral gondola.
